Which ignition kit should I get?

We offer ignition kits for N54's, N55's, and N20 engines.  But there are some specific options for each.

N20: We only offer this in one configuration.  It was designed around a BMW 3 series vehicle.  We occasionally get questions about if it will fit an X3, and while it will technically still work...  the mounting bracket does not fit, and you will have to make/modify the provided bracket to make it work.

N54:  We offer three variants.

  1. OEM Location
    • This location mounts the coils directly on top of where the spark plugs are installed at.
    • The spark plug wires may look like they are pointed the wrong direction, but simply twist them to install onto the coil pack
    • Suitable for most installations and does not interfere with most other modifications.
    • May be uncomfortably close to a large top-mount turbo
    • Requires modification of the engine cover.  Bare minimum removal of some of the foam noise insulator, or possibly cutting the cover to expose the coils for show.
  2. Stock Manifold
    • This relocates the ignition coils to mount to the direct injection fuel rail and sits on top of the OEM intake manifold.
    • This does require modification of the intake manifold (removal of a post on the manifold)
    • Requires modification to engine cover (cutting)
    • Because of this relocation, it does make servicing the spark plugs much easier as you do not have to remove the coils to remove the spark plug wires.
    • Not compatible with ANY airbox - you must run open filters or relocated intake.
  3. Aftermarket Manifold
    • This relocates the ignition coils to mount onto the fuel rail of an aftermarket manifold.
    • Compatible with Black Market Parts, Burger Tuning, Phoenix Racing, etc style manifolds.
    • NOT COMPATIBLE with Doc Race intake manifolds...  However for the early Doc Race manifolds with under-mount fuel rail are compatible with the Stock Manifold kits

N55: We offer two variants.

    • Not compatible with ANY airbox - you must run open filters or relocated intake.  Early N55 cars (where the air intake routes over the top of the engine MUST run a relocated inlet kit.

The N55 kits are exactly the same as the N54 manifold kits and are fully interchangeable.
